Universal Pictures is one of the United States' oldest film companies right behind Viacom's Paramount Pictures. It was founded in 1912 as Universal Film Manufacturing Company. The company expanded internationally in 1945 when it launched Universal International, a four company joint venture and when Decca Records took control. Universal's library has expanded through buyouts of companies, including UK based Polygram. Throughout the years its ownership has changed hands from MCA, Inc. to Matsushita, Seagram, Vivendi and NBCUniversal. It continued to operate as a division of NBC Universal until the latter's merger with Comcast Corporation.
