Dancing Queen is a song featured in the stage musical Mamma Mia!, its film adaptation, and the sequel to the film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. In the musical and first film, it's sung by Donna, Rosie, and Tanya with Company. Rosie and Tanya sing this song again in the second film, this time joined by Sophie, Bill, Harry, and Sam.

In the musical and first film, Donna is upset over the arrival of her three exes, one of which is Sophie's father. She reminisces about the past, the person she once was when she was younger. Her two best friends, Rosie and Tanya, sings this song with her to convince her that she can still be the girl she once was. In the musical, only the three women are singing inside Donna's bedroom, but in the film, the three women go around the island and sing with the women.

In the second film, after expressing distress over her problems with reopening the hotel and Sky, Sophie reunites with Sam, one of her possible fathers and her stepfather. After lamenting about her situation, Sophie is surprised to see that her two other possible fathers, Bill and Harry, are arriving on the island with guests to celebrate the reopening of Donna's hotel. She also reunites with Sky, who she hasn't seen in a while, at the end of the song.

This song is performed again as an encore in the stage productions and as an end credit scene in the first film.

Lyrics[]

Company:
A-ah, aah
A-ah, aah

Rosie and Tanya:
Ooh
You can dance
You can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl
Watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen

Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music
Getting in the swing

Rosie (with Tanya in certain productions):
You come to look for a king

Tanya (with Rosie):
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music's (high)
With a bit of rock music
Everything is fine
You're in the mood for a dance

Rosie and Tanya:
And when you get the chance

Rosie and Tanya (with Donna in certain productions):
You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet
Only seventeen
Dancing queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah

Donna, Rosie, and Tanya with Company harmonizing:

Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl
